GRAPHICS I was a graphic Art Director until I met Tommy D, and he asked me to promote his music. He also asked me to marry him, but that is another story. We produced a CD, press kit, video, and web site. Tommy played the clubs on Folsom Street, starting at the Ace cafe, moving on to the Holy Cow, and then down the street to the Paradise Lounge. I did the posters and flyers for the shows and talked to the friends and fans in the audience. I interviewed the people I didn't know and discovered people LOVE to be interviewed. It makes them feel important.
PR My first job as a publicist was with Flipside Freddie at the Paradise Lounge. After doing some posters, calendars and a web site, he asked me to do publicity. I put together a list of contacts and went to work on calendars, press releases and reviews of shows. My work drew the attention of other bands and I stayed pretty busy as the dot.com boom was going bust, and my graphics clients were disappearing.
I was asked to help with the Paradise Lounge. It was a publicist dream/nightmare. Rumors were flying about a pending sale and everybody wanted to know what was going on. I couldn't give them what they wanted, so I turned it around by saying, "We would like to know that too. Why is the city trying to shut down the live music clubs in SF?" Then I went into the story I wanted them to tell about the shows that were playing. I kept the secrets secret, even though the truth would have generated a larger audience. I just listened, agreed with everyone, and then did what I needed to do. I gained valuable experience and learned some important lessons about ethics.
I been expanding my horizons by taking on more bands and some film companies. I'm working on a book about one of the oldest coffee houses in Florida, Beaux Arts, of Pinellas Park, and the artists who passed through on their way to fame, fortune, or whatever.
